Iron and Ash Chawan

This bowl was thrown from our house black body and trimmed very thinly. We designed this clay to be extremely well-vitrified, which in this pot given it’s thinness makes the bowl ring like a bell when plucked. The top half of the pot, above the shoulder, was coated with an iron wash and then an ash glaze. The bottom half is bare clay, except where the iron glaze in spots has run down below the shoulder. The net effect is quite striking. I’m not sure if this pot maps on to any of the traditional Japanese tea bowl styles. It is functionally a chawan and could be used in tea ceremony. That said, I think I’m going to hold on to this one because it makes a really nice bowl for my cereal.
