Sapphire Chawan

This is a chawan in a shape that some traditional shino tea bowls use, made from our black clay body, and glazed with our copper red glaze. In this particular firing the copper red glaze didn’t form its usual deep crimson on the black clay body, but produced a range of tones between the copper red glaze and the blue from the cobalt in the clay body. The result in some areas is red, purple in others, and blue elsewhere. The glaze was poured over the outside of the pot leaving areas of raw black clay exposed.
