"Cloud" Shino Chawan
In my never-ending exploration of shino I frequently vary the techniques that are typically used in traditional shino to create contrast. That is typically varying the amount of iron in the clay body, that you apply under or over the shino glaze, and then how thickly you apply the shino glaze itself to the pot. When you want very little contrast, you use very little iron. This pot has just the miniscule amount of iron present in the groggy porcelain clay body from which it was thrown. Even that little bit of iron, in an intense reduction firing, is enough to produce some very subtle orange flashing. The net effect on this pot, along with the deformation on the room that occured in throwing, reminds me a bit of a cloud.
