Rough Shino Chawan

This shino pot was made from a commercial clay to which we added sawdust, coarse sand, feldspar chunks, and mica to produce a rough texture for the iron wash and shino glaze to interact with. That rough texture encourages pitting in the glaze that shinos are known for. If anything though this pot is non-traditionally “rough” with big chunks of feldspar and mica protruding up through the surface of the glaze, giving the impression that perhaps this bowl was more excavated than made. Which is what I was going for, thankfully.
